I had an hour to kill so although I’d been passing by Jennifer Lopez’s movie, This is me … Now, on Prime, it was short, less than an hour, so I decided to watch it. I’d describe this movie as sort of a narrative-driven musical odyssey that tells the story of Jennifer’s journey through heartbreak to forever love as seen through her own eyes.
This Is Me … Now: A Love Story jumps from genre to genre and at-times is an incredibly self-referential exploration of Lopez’s high profile personal life, which once again became a subject of much public interest when, after 20 years, she and Ben Affleck became engaged again and finally got married. Affleck, playing TV commentator Rex Stone, says in the closing credits “You just can’t make this shit up.”
The Star-Studded Zodiac Council
I had read no reviews of the movie so I was surprised to find that the film featured a Zodiac Council that guides Lopez’s character on her journey, by offering insightful, humorous and sometimes hilariously funny perspectives on her quest for love. (Be sure to click on this link to hear the zodiac council’s dialogue and prepare to laugh.)
Members of the Zodiac Council are played by some very famous names clothed in some very spectacular zodiac costumes.
-
Jay Shetty as Aries
-
Neil DeGrasse Tyson as Taurus
-
Jenifer Lewis as Gemini twins
-
Sofía Vergara as Cancer
-
Rapper Post Malone as Leo
-
Kim Petras as Virgo
-
Trevor Noah as Libra
-
Keke Palmer as Scorpio
-
Jane Fonda as Sagittarius
-
Sadhguru as Pisces
One can only imagine why Capricorn and Aquarius were shunned?
Significance and Function of the Zodiac Council
Lopez revealed in an interview the significance and function of the Zodiac Council in her movie (via today.com):
“I decided early on that this story was going to include a zodiac council, like a Greek chorus. This represents all the people who comment on your personal life all the time. You have your girlfriends who are talking about you. You have your coworkers, your family, all of that. With me, you add the media on top of that. I always had a Greek chorus commenting on my life, so I said, “We need to show this hopeless romantic that there are always people watching.”
