Mundane Astrology and the Horoscope of the United States

I thought it would be fun and interesting to analyze the horoscope of the United States. Though several have been created, I like the one set at 5:10 p.m. in Philadelphia, PA on July 4, 1776.   This gives Sagittarius rising, a Moon in Aquarius, and a Cancer Sun. There is a stellium of four planets in Cancer. [Venus, Jupiter, the Sun and Mercury range 3-24 d] The time was proposed by Dane Rudhyar, a famous astrologer.

I favor the Sagittarius Ascendant because we are a nation of immigrants.  18.7% of the population is Hispanic while 12.1% are African American.  Asian Americans compose 5.9% of the population.  White Americans, the largest group, comprise 57.8% of the total.  Native Americans account for about 1%. Thirty-seven ancestry groups are represented.  (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, article on the United States) Sagittarius is associated with long distance travel and foreign cultures.

The Cancer Sun—the sign of home and family—is conjoined with Jupiter, the planet of good fortune.  This is certainly an indicia of the nation’s great wealth. It would also provide a certain amount of luck.   The stellium in Cancer makes us a country of foodies. That sign is associated with the stomach.  It is the American Dream to own one’s home.

One example of the country’s good fortune is the discovery of gold at Sutter’s mill shortly after Mexico ceded California to the U.S. at the end of the Mexican American War in 1848.  Another is the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.  Napoleon was hard pressed for cash and sold the U.S. 820,000 square miles (about twice the area of Egypt) for fifteen million dollars or less than three cents an acre.

A further 586,412 square miles (about twice the area of Texas) were added to the country when Russia sold Alaska to the United States for $7.2 million or two cents an acre.  Russia was struggling with Crimean War debt and some difficulties with the Tlingit tribes. (Brittanica: “Alaska Purchase:  United States History”, www.brittanica.com)  Gold was discovered in 1896.

The Second House contains both the planet Pluto and the Moon.  In Mundane Astrology the second represents national money, banks, revenue, and commercial affairs.

The Moon in the second suggests the nation’s businessmen are generally shrewd. There can be fluctuations in income.  (Modified from Parkers’ Compleat Astrologer, p. 88) Pluto will add business ability, drive and perhaps covetousness.  (Ibid, p. 104)

The Moon is trine Mars.  This means there is a lot of self-will in foreign affairs. This aspect really says I want things done my way.

In Mundane Astrology the Seventh House indicates relationships with other countries as it is the opposite of the First House of self.  War (open enemies, a relationship gone bad), foreign trade, and
international disputes would all be governed by the 7th. The Sun, Jupiter, and Venus here point to ability in business partnerships. Jupiter in this position can also indicate extravagance and a need for fun. (Ibid, 96) Mars in this place is indicative of much energy put into international affairs. “Under affliction quarrels and disappointments can occur.” (94)

The Eighth House rules debt (other peoples’ money, loans the country and its cities and towns take out), interest, and taxes. It is also concerned with death, murder, crime, and terrorist attacks.  (“The Houses in Mundane Astrology,” April 4, 2018, www.thedarkpixieastrology.com )

Mercury in the 8th House means there is much communication directed at and about the nation’s budget, debt, and financial expenditures.  Note also the endless debates about gun control after the ongoing plethora of mass shootings in the workplaces and at schools.  Here “deep rooted emotions may be aroused by others.” (Parker, 90)

The 9th, a travel house, holds Neptune which represents glamour, illusion, and the sea. The 9th is sometimes called the House of Dreams.  Here we have a very well-developed film industry in Hollywood (make believe). Its films are distributed and shown all over the world.  Cruise ships with their exotic and romantic ports of call are well-advertised.  Many glean knowledge of different locales from television channels like National Geographic, the History Channel and Animal Planet.

The 10th House rules the government, the country’s leaders including the president, and people in charge generally.  Saturn here seemingly represents a nation where its leaders are often austere, constructive, reliable, responsible, and self- disciplined.  Parts of the populace often disagree with some of presidents’ decision making.  This placement of Saturn could indicate their belief that something is wanting (a sense of lack). Our leaders have terms (limits in time).

Mars in trine Saturn seemingly shows the nation’s executives will just about always be able to lead us through harsh conditions and bad events. [Sun/Jupiter conjunction too.]

The Sixth House represents the nation’s workers, their work including the trades, and public health.   Uranus is located here.  This shows a clever, inventive workforce proficient with technology.  There can also be unpredictability.

The chart for the United States is a fortunate one.  May the Almighty continue to bless her.
