SUMMARY:Astrology in Renaissance Art: Representation and Meaning
DESCRIPTION:For the Month of February only\, our meeting date and format will be different. Instead of meeting on the third Thursday of the month at 7:30\, we will be meeting In Person ONLY February 9th. We will be featuring a Zoom presentation of the Smithsonian’s Astrology in Renaissance Art: Representation and Meaning. \nMAAS doors will open at 6:00 pm. The presentation runs from 6:15 to 8:15\, after which we will have a post lecture discussion. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Pyramid! \n  \nDESCRIPTION: The study and practice of astrology re-entered Western Europe in the early 12th century\, primarily via Spain. There Arabic and Jewish scholars had preserved ancient astrology\, but also added much to it\, particularly in abstract rather than practical ways. By the 14th century\, every university in Europe had a chair of astrology\, and developments toward a more observationally based practice were taking place. \nBy the 15th century in Italy\, particularly in Florence\, we see the beginnings of the use of astrological imagery that was based on specific data\, beyond the commonplace medieval representations of the zodiac signs or months\, and the activities associated with them. \nAmong the early instances that represent the intersection of art and astrology in a particular time and place is a painting created for the dome above the altar in the older Medici Chapel of the church of San Lorenzo. The Medici family would continue to use astrological imagery to promote themselves and their increasing de-facto power in Florence through the century\, as well as for personal protection. In the 16th century\, the use of astrological imagery as propaganda for destined rule reached new levels under Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici\, first Grand Duke of Tuscany. \nThe controversies over the Arabic theory of planetary conjunctions\, especially that of 1484\, which predicted the end of the Christian religion\, helped to drive European developments in the practice of astrology and its representation in art. Join art critic and professor emerita of art history at Montgomery College Claudia Rousseau as she explains what astrology actually is\, how it works\, and its mathematical basis\, as well as its cultural importance and how it was represented in art in the Renaissance era. The Christian astrologer’s motto: “The stars do not compel\, they incline.” \nABOUT THE SPEAKER: This presentation is brought to you by the Smithsonian. \n  \n

SUMMARY:2nd February 2023 Meeting!
DESCRIPTION:“2023: The Pluto Return Continues” was the title of Frances Rackow’s presentation on predicting what’s ahead for 2023. \nWhat Frances Rackow did not note is that the Lunar New Year\, the New Moon\, just two days after our meeting\, was occurring right on that 1 degree Aquarius “hot degree.” \nWhat a hot degree it turned out to be!  Antifa came back and appeared in our own city of Atlanta\, shooting at police\, getting shot\, causing destruction and a burning police car.  This violence was not limited to Atlanta. \nWe noted that in 1969 Nixon was elected and he had his “Watergate” event involving the FBI\, and recent new suggests our current President may have some legal challenges coming. \nSince we have no regular meeting scheduled this month due to the presentation the week before\, I thought it would be fun to offer to meet at the building or online with those of you who might like to continue the conversation about 2023\, particularly in light of what events have been triggered by the lunation on the hot degree! \nI will come prepared with a chart for the U. S. Constitution and anything else that I have time to research beforehand.  I would like this to be an opportunity for members to contribute and feel free to ask me any specific questions\, as well as offer your insights as to what current events portend for the upcoming year. \n  \nItems we discussed in January regarding 2023: \n\nThe United States’ Pluto return to its natal chart is still in orb. (I would like to revisit that a bit.)\nThe Great Mutation of Jupiter conjunct Saturn also conjunct Pluto in December 21\, 2020\, the beginning of a 240 year cycle of conjunctions in air after 240 years of dominantly Earth conjunctions. Fran presented the predictions of Barbara Kovall from 1993 which were amazingly prescient\, even entitling the chapter “The New World Order” in her book.\n\n(One member shared an alternative view of the cycle\, which was very interesting.) \n\nThe last Mars-Saturn Conjunction\nEclipses in 2022 and the previous events of the same Saros Cycle in 2005\nEclipses in 2022 and the previous events of the same eclipse degrees in 2004\, looking back at Bill Meridian’s forecast in Dell Horoscope magazine.\nBill Meridian’s “Economic Prediction” book and the negative economic indicators present in 2023 per that work.\nThe Eclipse of 1969 is close in longitude to the eclipse on the west coast and into South America as the 2023 October eclipse path\, because the longitude of eclipses recurs in a 54 year cycle.\nThe current Solar Ingress.\nDetermining the “Hot Degrees” for 2023 and when those aspects would occur.\n\nBy far the “hottest degree” is the area of late Cardinal and Early Fixed degrees\, due to the movement of Pluto back and forth between late Capricorn and early Aquarius\, triggering the Jupiter-Saturn\, USA natal Pluto\, and other aspects during the year. \nA handout with upcoming dates of transits to eclipse points\, etc. was given out. \n  \n
