Vignettes of Famous Astrologers

John Hazelrigg (June 20, 1860- 1941) had a twin brother who was an hour older. He initially was an actor, but he abandoned that profession to become an astrologer.  He published the book Metaphysical Astrology in 1900 and started a magazine, Astro-Herald in 1901.  He formed the American Academy of Astrologers in 1916.  This group met to discuss the esoteric aspects of astrology.  (www.encyclopedia.com)

Hazelrigg was a Gemini with a Cancer Moon and Libra rising.  He had a stellium in Cancer and the Moon was conjoined with Mercury.

 

Grant Lewi (June 8, 1902-1951) was born in Albany, New York and graduated from Columbia.  He taught English at several colleges including Dartmouth.  Athene Gale Wallace, his mother-in-law, taught him astrology.

Lewi pioneered chart synthesis with 144 Sun Moon sign combinations and aspect cross references that he developed through thousands of questionnaire responses.  These were detailed in his book Heaven Knows What which was published in 1935. Grant was a Gemini with a Cancer Moon and Leo rising.  Like Hazelrigg he had a stellium in Cancer but another in Gemini.

 

Charles Edwin Owen (C.E.O) Carter (January 31, 1887-1968) was an attorney and World War I veteran.  He started studying astrology in 1910. He war experiences changed him.  He could no longer stand to be in confined spaces.  After the end of the Great War, he helped resettle families.

 

Carter was President of the Astrological Lodge of London for over thirty years and Principal of the faculty of Astrological Studies which was founded in 1948.

His books were very popular and include The Principles of Astrology, Astrological Aspects, Some Principles of Horoscope Delineation, An Introduction to Political Astrology, and Encyclopedia of Psychological Astrology. Charles Carter was an Aquarius with a Taurus Moon and Libra rising.   His Mercury was square Jupiter but trine to both Uranus and Pluto.

 

Carroll Righter (February 2, 1900-April 30, 1988) wrote a syndicated newspaper column that ran in 166 newspapers.  For each day he would suggest a profession.
Righter was known as the astrologer to the stars because of his many celebrity clients.  Originally from Philadelphia, he moved to the west coast for his health.
Like C.E.O. Carter he was an attorney.  Righter was known to be gregarious, and his clients included Rhonda Fleming, Grace Kelly, and Joan Fontaine.  He operated from his home and had parties for celebrities.

Righter was an Aquarius with both the Moon and Ascendant falling in Pisces.  His Mercury was conjoined with Mars and sextile to both Jupiter and Uranus. Carroll also had a Sun/Mars conjunction while Jupiter was together with Uranus.

Books that Carroll Righter authored included Astrology and You, The Astrological Guide to Health and Diet, and Family Relations.

Alan Leo (August 7, 1860- August 30, 1917) was the most famous astrologer of the Victorian era.  Born William Frederick Allan, he took the name of his Sun Sign as his surname.  He emphasized character reading as opposed to predicting events.  With the latter he thought it best to emphasize forthcoming trends of experience. Leo died of a cerebral hemorhage shortly after defending himself on a charge of fortune telling from which he was found guilty and fined five pounds plus costs. He founded the Astrological Lodge of London in 1915.

Alan was a prolific writer and some of his books include Astrology for All, The Progressed Horoscope, How to Judge a Nativity, Horary Astrology, and A Thousand and One Notable Nativities.

Alan Leo had an Aries Moon and a Leo rising sign.  He had a Sun/Jupiter conjunction while Mercury and Saturn were bound together.

Julia Parker (July 27, 1932) was an art teacher, chorus girl, actor, painter, set designer, and professional photographer before she began studying astrology.  Her most famous book, The Compleat Astrologer, has sold over a million copies.  Besides a Leo Sun, Julia has a Taurus Moon, and Sagittarius Ascendant.  Notable features in her chart include a heavily aspected Mercury—five in all–including Jupiter conjoined.  Venus and Mars are in Gemini.  Her husband, and sometimes co-author, Derek, is a Gemini.  A later book was entitled Parkers’ Astrology.  (Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia)

 

William John Warner aka Cheiro  was born on November 1, 1866, near Dublin, Ireland.  Warner’s sobriquet comes from cheiromancy which means palmistry.  He said he learned astrology, numerology, and palmistry in India when he travelled there as a teen. Meeting his guru, Warner was taken to Maharashtra where he was permitted to study an ancient book that had many studies on hands.  The pages of the book—this may have been apocryphal– were made of human skin and the lettering was pure gold.

Cheiro had a wide following of famous clients including Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, Grover Cleveland, General Kitchener, William E. Gladstone, and Sarah Bernhardt.

Both Mark Twain and Ella Wheeler Wilcox were amazed by the accuracy of their readings. Their comments were in his visitor’s book.

Warner lived in London, travelled about much of the world, and his final years were spent in Hollywood where he died in 1936.

William John Warner wrote a number of books.  These included Cheiro’s Book of Numbers, Cheiro’s Language of the Hand, You and Your Hand, and Cheiro’s You and Your Star: The Book of the Zodiac.

Cheiro was a Scorpio with a Virgo Moon and Sagittarius rising.  He had a stellium in Scorpio (Sun, Mercury, and Saturn).  Uranus in Cancer was trine his Sun and Saturn.

Lois Rodden (May 22, 1928-June 5, 2003) is well-known for collecting accurate birth data of celebrities and public figures.  She developed Astro-Databank, an online resource, with a computer programmer.  Stressing accuracy, her rating system was as follows:  AA Birth Certificate Available, A From Friend, B From Biography, C Caution, DD Dirty Data, and X Date Without Time.  Astro-Databank was sold to Astrodeinst, a Swiss Company.  It is still free.

Rodden taught at the Hollywood Astrological Society and built up a clientele around 1973.  She wrote definitions of transits for an early computer company that sold monthly forecasts.  Married and divorced, she died in Yucaipa, CA in 2003.  Lois was a member of the Inland Empire Mensa.  (Wikipedia)

Lois Rodden was a Gemini with the Moon in Cancer and an Aquarius Ascendant. Her chart type is the bucket with Saturn, the planet of responsibility, being the handle. She had a Mars/Uranus conjunction in Aries.  Her Sun was in the 3^rd House.

 

Dane Rudhyar was born in Paris on March 23, 1895.  When he was twelve he became quite ill, that and a subsequent surgery left him disabled, and he turned to intellectual pursuits.  He graduated from the Sorbonne in Paris at sixteen. Rudhyar also studied at the Paris Conservatoire, a college of music.  His original compositions and arrangements were performed by the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1917.

Rudhyar was an artist.  He joined the Transcendental Painting Group in 1938.
He painted and drew Jungian archetypes.

Dane learned Jungian psychology and astrology at the same time.  He felt the stars detailed psychological forces working in people.  He called his interpretation Humanistic Astrology.  His book, The Astrology of Personality, was published in 1936.

Little known outside astrological circles, Rudhyar wrote and lectured for over two decades. The New Age movement in the 1970s brought his works to light.  Penguin Books, a major publisher, printed his The Practice of Astrology.

Dane was married four times. He died on September 13, 1985.

Rudhyar, an Aries, had his Moon in Aquarius.  Sagittarius was rising. Notable features in his chart included a stellium in Gemini (Mars, Neptune, Pluto, and Jupiter, the first three conjoined) and Mercury in Pisces. His Sun was in the 3^rd House.

Noel Tyl was born in Chester, Pennsylvania on December 31, 1936.  He studied singing and piano at school and graduated from Harvard where he studied psychology, sociology, and anthropology.  He sang in a production of the Barber of Seville and was the business manager for the Houston Grand Opera.  For twenty years he sang bass and bass baritone in many opera houses.  Noel established a public relations firm, Tyl Associates, in Washington, D.C.

Tyl had developed an interest in astrology at the age of 28 after a Saturn return.
He was self-taught and frequented Zoltan Mason’s bookstore in New York City.
Noel had a long association with Llewellen Publications.  They published his twelve-volume series The Principles and Practice of Astrology.  Another notable work was his Synthesis and Counseling in Astrology. It is a thousand-page manual on the use of astrology in counseling.

Noel moved to Arizona in 1994.  He was a founding member of the Association for Astrological Networking (AFAN).   Tyl was reportedly 6’ 11” tall.  He passed away on his birthday in 2019.
