Astrology: Science, Art, Religion? with Becca Tarnas and Matthew Segall

For some, astrology is a science, no less mathematically rigorous and empirically grounded than astronomy. For others, astrology is more of an art, with subjective interpretation and poetic expression playing essential roles. The beliefs and practices of astrology lead still others to view it as a religion or spiritual discipline.

In this presentation, Becca and Matt will engage in a philosophical and practical dialogue about the nature of the astrological discipline, its controversial status in intellectual and popular cultures, and how the language we use to describe it affects our understanding of what astrology can tell us about our world.

Becca and Matthew will be joining us remotely from their home in California.

The meeting is free to MAAS members, $15 for non-members. The door opens at 7:00 PM to allow for conversation and browsing the MAAS astrological library. The lecture begins at 7:30 PM.

  • You may attend remotely via GoToMeeting, this is also free for MAAS members. Simply email info@atlantaastrology.com no later than June 17 to be sent a link.
  • Non-members may also attend remotely via GoToMeeting for $18. Please pay through PayPal no later than September 17 to be sent a link.

Becca and Matthew’s lecture will be followed on Saturday, September 22, by a there hour virtual workshop that will engage the audience in a few deep time and inner space meditations with the aim of integrating the scientific, artistic, and religious dimensions of astrological practice explored in their Thursday evening presentation.  There will also be ample time for continued dialogue on these themes.

Time: 12pm-3pm EST (11am–2pm CST, 10am-1pm MST, 9am-12pm PST)

Astrology Transit Support Group

Solar-System-MAAS

In this group, we bring together Astrology and Community to explore our unique life maps and our current astrological weather, known as transits. “Transits are how we grow, transform, and evolve. They are life in motion.” This monthly group offers a great way to better understand yourself and others through exploring the current astrological transits from personal and societal perspectives and is a wonderful way to connect with the natural cycles of life. Learn about transits, explore your own transits, and give and receive support from others in the astrological community.

Transit Support Group meets the 4th Thursday of every month, 7-9:30 PM (with the exception of the months of November and December.)

The cost is $20 for members and non-members.

Beginners through advanced astrologers are welcome and encouraged!

This is a great way to meet other like-minded astrology lovers, to socialize, share stories, and learn more about astrology in a friendly, open, and supportive environment.

Please email Michelle Gregg at astrology@michellegregg.com no later than 48 hours prior to the meeting with your birth info: birth date, birth time, and birth place (city, state/province, country.)

What are transits?
“A transit occurs whenever a planet, moving in its orbit during your lifetime, forms an aspect (a geometric connection) to a planet, the Sun Moon, or any of the house cusps in your natal horoscope. Also whenever a planet passes through the part of the Zodiac occupied by a house in your natal chart, we say that the planet is transiting the house.”  ~Rob Hand

“When a currently orbiting planet makes contact with any of your birth chart’s planets or points, that orbiting planet is making a “transit” to your birth chart and thus to a particular piece of your psyche. When this transit occurs the energy of the orbiting planet connects with the energy of your natal planet or point, and a synergy is created between them. You are then required to respond to this newly created synergy in some way. The way in which you respond is up to you – you can do it very poorly, or very well, or somewhere in-between. This is why it’s important to know what transits you’re having and understand the potentials that lie in their combinations – once you become conscious of the energies that are operating in your life you can make the best possible decisions. You can elevate your consciousness around the areas of your psyche that are being impacted. Transits are how we grow, transform, and evolve. They are life in motion.” ~Michelle Gregg

The 8th Seal with Don Cerow

the 8thseal half

Don Cerow will be presenting a synopsis of his new book, The 8th Seal, in which he examines early periods of history and Old Testament prophesies— particularly in the books of Isaiah and Daniel—that mirror astronomical and predictive methods. Observation of the heavens allowed the sage(s) of Revelation to predict future events, just as patterns in the sky at the time of the birth of Jesus allowed the Three Wise Men to arrive at the manger.

The Book of Revelation documents both preceding and later history—the transition from the Greece to Rome, the evolution of the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire, the great waves of plague and invasion that caused the final fall of Rome, the eighth and ninth century Viking invasions, and the split between Roman and Orthodox Churches.

Every age is dramatically different, leading to different philosophies and tasks. We are now entering the Age of Aquarius, a period in which scientific thinking and new knowledge will inform the validity of faith. The author demonstrates this with carefully delineated astronomical information. He describes the characteristics of this new era and helps provide the guidance we will need to order our lives in harmony with such grand cosmic principles and events.

In a very real sense, the planet’s transition into the Age of Aquarius at this time represents the end of the world as we know it. We are at the beginning of a series of new possibilities, new aims, and new realities that offer new ways of development. This book offers both hope and caution for the future.

Author of the groundbreaking Ibis Press title When the Dragon Wore the Crown, Cerow’s focus has been on the Ancient Mysteries and how they evolved from the study of the sky. In 2003, he reconstructed an early model of Stonehenge in a story that was picked up by the New York Times. In 2005, he produced a multi-media show for Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado, pushing back the limits of what our forbearers knew about the heavens. In 2012, he lectured at CPAK (the Conference for Precession and Ancient Knowledge).
