Hellenistic-Astrology-image

$50 for MAAS members, $60 for all others.
You may attend this event online for $60. Please email info@atlantaastrology.com to attend from a distance.

Presented by Naomi Bennett, in this “Astrology’s Ancient Roots, and Reliable Predictions” workshop, you’ll learn the reasons behind astrology’s design and how it was created in Hellenistic Egypt for horoscopic astrology and it’s astronomical basis. Naomi will then look at house characteristics from a modern and traditional point of view, with the structure of how duality works with sign and houses. The aspects will also be looked into and how their characteristics are formed from the houses. Finally, she’ll explore the background of historical predictions, transits, Out of Bounds planets, heliocentric planetary nodes, eclipses and moon wobbles, and how the Arabic parts/Greek Lots are used in predictions and analysis.

What is Horoscopic Astrology? “The main thing that distinguishes horoscopic astrology from other forms of astrology is the use of the ascendant and other points that are derived from the ascendant. Originally the Greek term “hōroskopos,” from which our terms “horoscope” and “horoscopic” are derived, was simply a technical term that was used to refer to the “ascendant” in an astrological chart. Hōroskopos literally means “hour-marker,” and in Hellenistic astrology, the term was used to refer to the ascendant and to the first house in a chart.”

Foundations of Astrology review from The Mountain Astrologer magazine, Aug./Sept. 2015 p.83

“Foundations of Astrology is Naomi Bennett’s attempt to “aid our astrological community in rediscovering its roots and foundations.” To this end, her book contains a wealth of insightful information which will satisfy astrologers of all levels. Beginners — and those familiar with the basics but looking for a more nuanced portrayal — will especially enjoy the detailed explorations of the signs in the chapters “Water and Earth, Signs of the Past” and “Fire and Air, Signs of the Future.” In these chapters, Bennett presents her own ideas and shares some ideas from one of her teachers, Carl Payne Tobey. Here, Bennett’s intention is to explore the “deeper emotional drives” of the signs. She writes, “If the basic psychological underpinnings are understood, then behaviors can be understood.”

More experienced astrologers will appreciate a reasoned voice discussing topics not often written about, such as issues relating to the links between sign and house rulerships, factors affecting house construction, and how one might best approach making reliable predictions. Bennett favors transits over progressed, directed, or planetary period methods, and she provides an in-depth look at various ways to use transits. The chapter entitled “Reliable Predictions” features sections on transits (including diagrams of the graphic ephemeris), solar returns, planetary nodes, declinations and Out of Bounds (OOB), Solar Arabic Parts, dispositorship, rulership, and decans.

Geometry and astronomy are explored, adding depth to Bennett’s discussion of astrology’s origins. She writes: “I believe that a broader perspective is needed to get to the fundamentals of its beginnings. I have found that my knowledge of astrology has been expanded much more widely when I started reading books in other fields of study like archeoastronomy, ancient history, astronomy and the belief systems of other cultures like the Incas and Mayans.”

In the chapter “Sign Rulership with Hellenistic Planetary Order,” Bennett explores how the planets link to the signs they rule, and she presents ideas about how to incorporate the outer planets into this system using the planets’ “average mean distance to the Earth.” Based on this, Bennett works with a sign rulership system that gives Uranus to Aquarius, Neptune to Pisces, and Pluto to Aries (Mars is given to Scorpio). Continuing this theory, Bennett posits that there are two more planets to be discovered that would eventually be given rulership over Taurus and Gemini.

In “Horoscope Construction,” Bennett discusses approaching the chart through a combination of using Equal Houses and then adding in the Mid¬ heaven as a floating point, writing, “I see the Equal House chart as a refinement of the Whole Sign houses.” She also contends that “the cusp is the cen¬ ter of the house and that the house extends 15 degrees on either side of the cusp.” There is discussion on how certain house systems lead to distortion in the size of the houses as the latitude increases, and she touches on out of sign aspects and aspects as houses.

Bennett makes a compelling argument for the view that we are already in the Age of Aquarius, via consideration of the constellations that rise at the solstices and equinoxes. The author’s thorough approach — supporting her points with historical diagrams and images— lends weight to her ideas. She discusses the good and bad sides of having so much astrological information available at the touch of a button, thanks to the advent of the computer age. She charges that we should each be a “critical observer” of astrology.

You, too, could do the detailed research that Bennett has done, or you could simply curl up with her book and enjoy the best of what she has discovered. In that way, Foundations of Astrology acts as a primer on the many links between different fields and the origins of astrology. Numerous diagrams and images of ancient works and geometrical principles are presented to illustrate the concepts that Bennett explores, which include a discussion of the symbolism and meanings behind numbers, as well as reference to the Fibonacci Numbers and fractal geometry.

The author has written an organized survey of several important topics associated with the foundations of astrology. Going beyond the general modern themes, her work is grounded in solid research and backed up with insightful diagrams. Each chapter is rounded out by extensive footnotes, which means you can go a little deeper with points that grab your interest.

Naomi Bennett’s Foundations of Astrology contributes to many of the ongoing and emerging debates about the history and development of astrology. It’s a thought provoking read that will challenge you to question any shaky assumptions you might have about astrology and its beginnings. It’s a slim book and, for an engaged reader, a fairly quick read, but the information contained herein will continue to get you thinking for days afterwards.

Jung, Dreams, Astrology: As Above So Below, As Within So Without with Cathy Pagano
Thursday, March 15, 2018, 7:00 PM

C.G. Jung’s exploration of the archetypal patterns of life led him to study astrology as a system of archetypal energies at work in the world. “The starry vault of heaven is in truth the open book of cosmic projection, in which are reflected the mythologems, i.e., the archetypes. In this vision astrology and alchemy, the two classical functionaries of the psychology of the collective unconscious, join hands.” ~ Carl G. Jung

Jung felt that it was important to combine the two ‘arts:’ Astrology, which lays out the fundamental blueprint or pattern of a person’s life, and Depth Psychology and Dream Work, which fills in the individual content of that blueprint. Astrology can pinpoint the issues to be faced, while Dream Work gives us access to how we are relating to those issues – our individual response to the astrological patterns of our life.

In this lecture, we’ll look at some dreams and how they are reflected by transits in our astrology charts. If you have what we call a ‘big’ dream – full of archetypal images – do up a chart (natal, progressions and transits) for that day and bring it in and we’ll discuss how they relate if we have time.

ABOUT CATHY PAGANO

Cathy Lynn Pagano, M.A. C.E.C. is a Jungian-trained psychotherapist, archetypal astrologer, Wisdom Coach and teacher. She uses astrology with her clients (just as Jung did) to help understand what life issues need to be dealt with. She is also the author of a book, “Wisdom’s Daughters: How Women Can Change the World” about the return of the Divine Feminine and her gift of Wisdom, which is sorely needed in these chaotic times.

What are transits?
“A transit occurs whenever a planet, moving in its orbit during your lifetime, forms an aspect (a geometric connection) to a planet, the Sun Moon, or any of the house cusps in your natal horoscope. Also whenever a planet passes through the part of the Zodiac occupied by a house in your natal chart, we say that the planet is transiting the house.”  ~Rob Hand

“When a currently orbiting planet makes contact with any of your birth chart’s planets or points, that orbiting planet is making a “transit” to your birth chart and thus to a particular piece of your psyche. When this transit occurs the energy of the orbiting planet connects with the energy of your natal planet or point, and a synergy is created between them. You are then required to respond to this newly created synergy in some way. The way in which you respond is up to you – you can do it very poorly, or very well, or somewhere in-between. This is why it’s important to know what transits you’re having and understand the potentials that lie in their combinations – once you become conscious of the energies that are operating in your life you can make the best possible decisions. You can elevate your consciousness around the areas of your psyche that are being impacted. Transits are how we grow, transform, and evolve. They are life in motion.” ~Michelle Gregg
